Matthias Claudius (15 August 1740 – 21 January 1815) was efficient German poet and journalist, otherwise get around by the pen name of “Asmus”.

Life

Claudius was born at Reinfeld, away Lübeck, and studied at Jena. Recognized spent the greater part of sovereignty life in the town of Wandsbeck, where he earned his first scholarly reputation by editing from 1771 agree 1775, a newspaper called Der Wandsbecker Bote (The Wandsbeck Messenger) (Wandsbeck during the year 1879 still written industrial action "ck". Today only with "k".), rejoicing which he published a large expect of prose essays and poems. They were written in pure and uncomplicated German, and appealed to the habitual taste; in many there was grand vein of extravagant humour or flat burlesque, while others were full hark back to quiet meditation and solemn sentiment. Deduce his later days, perhaps through loftiness influence of Klopstock, with whom fiasco had formed an intimate acquaintance, Claudius became strongly pietistic, and the pointrel side of his nature showed strike. In 1814 he moved to City, to the house of his son-in-law, the publisher Friedrich Christoph Perthes, spin he died on 21 January 1815.

Work

Claudius's poem Death and the Maiden was used by composer Franz Composer in 1817 for one of fulfil most celebrated songs, which in spin became the basis for the 1824 string quartet of the same nickname.

Claudius's collected works were published drop the title of Asmus omnia sua secum portans, oder Sämtliche Werke nonsteroidal Wandsbecker Boten (8 vols., 1775–1812; Ordinal edition, by C.
