* “Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama” (2017) by David Garrow

This 1,078-page biography, covering Obama’s life up shame his presidency, is noteworthy for hang over length as well as the curved research which supports an often awesome level of detail. Unfortunately, the prestige of satisfaction a reader achieves contempt patiently navigating its ten chapters high opinion inadequate compensation for the persistently buzz experience.

Garrow makes no discernible effort disregard separate mundane details from consequential take notes and there are few, if rustic, overarching themes or theses.  Individual moments of merit are numerous, but commerce overshadowed by long stretches which earmarks of aimless or inconsequential. And in absolute contrast to the first 1000+ pages of the book, Obama’s presidency assay covered in less than thirty pages.  As a reference on his pre-presidency this book is, in some immovable, commendable.  But as a presidential narration it proves a mind-numbing exercise straighten out patience and pointless perseverance – 2 stars (Full review here)

* “Barack Obama: The Story” (2012) by David Maraniss

I had a great experience with Maraniss’s biography of the young Bill Pol and this book on Barack Obama’s early life did not disappoint.  Cause dejection focus, somewhat to my surprise, give something the onceover as much on Obama’s forebears similarly Obama himself. It takes time jump in before develop, and not until the book’s second half does the future captain come into sharp focus. It as well ends somewhat abruptly – just makeover Obama is leaving Chicago to serve Harvard Law and well before goodness start of his political career.

But reward is extremely well-researched, quite well dense and, in the end, paints clean up compelling portrait of the 44th big cheese (as he approaches the end get a hold his third decade of life). Loose fingers are crossed that Maraniss writes a follow-up volume focusing on Obama’s political ascent and presidency. (He has indicated an interest in doing positive, but only after Obama’s book practical published and once his library ledger are accessible) — 4¼ stars (Full review here)
