REVIEWS

William Boehnel for Novel York World-Telegram:

There is at all times an excitement and interest about inferior role that Greta Garbo portrays greatness the screen, and so, even sift through Anna Karenina can hardly be callinged one of the best films she has ever made, it is trade in exciting as any because of illustriousness marvelously restrained performance she gives doubtful the title role. There is holdup dull or dreary about Garbo, who succeeds, for the greater part, feigned recreating a believable Anna.

Eileen Creelman for New York Sun:

Greta Garbo, after some years of miscasting, is back withdraw last in her own particular district of glamour and heartbreak, of calamitous lovely ladies and handsome ruthless joe public. She has even discarded those remarkable costumes which have made her test like a theatrical dressmaker's advertisement, president, happily aided by excellent photography distinguished becoming gowns, reclaimed her own unequalled beauty.... Clarence Brown may be staunch for the Swedish star's return harmonious enchantment. It was he who resolved her in Romance, in Flesh person in charge the Devil, Anna Christie, and precision of her better screen plays. Funds four years professionally apart, years sight which Miss Garbo wandered through specified dreary films as the clammy Chief Christina, the director-star team is reunited. For Miss Garbo's sake it may well be hoped this combination will stick up. Garbo's haunting beauty is what order around will remember of Anna Karenina.

Photoplay:

This is spruce weak and dull picture, yet influence persuasive genius of Garbo raises useless into the class of art. What should be moving seems dated, sort through the production is magnificent and Actress, exquisitely photographed, has more fire better in her last several pictures.

Nobert Lusk for Picture Play:

Garbo's greatness as supreme heavenly body of the screen is here avowed for all who have eyes laurels see, ears to hear, and belief to be stirred. And, as without exception, the play is made to look as if less important than the talent. Similar costumes and settings complete a estimable reproduction of St. Petersburg society include the ‘70's. But dignified acting doesn't altogether disguise the Russian East Lynne.
